Swedish Export Credit Agency on harsher times for green tech companies with global ambition: “The green transition is also about managing risks”

The green transition is underway, but — as with any major societal change — it is neither a smooth nor straightforward process, said Karin Wessman, Head of Sustainability at The Swedish Export Credit Agency (EKN), at Techarena ZERO, the Swedish high-level tech and sustainability conference focussed on business opportunities in the green transition.

The Swedish Export Credit Agency generally supports Swedish exports with risk management and financing solutions. For example, by insuring payments and sharing risk with banks, exporting companies, and their suppliers, with state-backed guarantees.

One specific initiative aims to foster sustainable and green innovation coming out of Sweden called “green credit guarantees”.

“We have made some observations: Swedish companies are leading in both technology and sustainability and their customers are increasingly demanding these services and products. Our goal is to support Swedish companies throughout the entire value chain to enable more green exports”, said Karin Wessman after participating in a panel discussion at Techarena ZERO on investments in the green transition.

Natural with backlashes in large-scale transitions

She also addressed the talks about a “green bubble,” with companies like Northvolt seeing both financial and operational issues.

“As a company, I think you need to act long-term, whether you’re in early-stage development or scaling up. I don’t see that there’s a green bubble. The green transition is happening globally, but it’s more a question of if everybody is a winner in the transition”, said Wessman and continued:

“The answer is no. As with any major transformation, some companies will emerge as winners, while others may face setbacks or delayed investments. It’s always wise to have a plan B, especially with large-scale transitions”.
